Solar Energy Systems: How They Work. The sun is already generating huge amounts of energy, which is exactly why you should put it to use in your home. With the Lennox® SunSource® Energy System we carry at Durable Service in Holdrege, you can decrease your dependence on oil and gas and lower your utility bills. But how does it change from sunlight to energy? The easiest way to explain a solar energy system is that the system uses solar modules made of photovoltaic (PV) cells to collect energy from the sun and convert it to electricity. This electricity will then power light, appliances and electrical devices in your home. Grid-tied PV systems Grid-tied PV systems are the most common and least expensive for residential solar systems. The SunSource Energy System we have available is grid-tied, meaning it’s connected to your utility company’s power grid or power stations. Grid-tied enables you to use your solar energy system to power your home. At times when the system isn’t producing electricity, the utility grid will supply power to your home. In addition, when your system produces enough to power your home and then some, it will be fed back into the grid through net-metering. With net-metering, your meter spins forward if you’re using electricity from the grid and backward when you’re feeding electricity from your SunSource System back into the grid. *Note: Most rebates and incentives that make a solar energy system easier to afford are only available when your system is grid-tied. Stand-alone PV systems are another option for those in remote areas without utility service, but they cost a lot more. A stand-alone system is not connected to a utility grid and provide for a home’s entire energy consumption. Ready to go solar? Call Durable Service at 308-995-8177 or create an appointment online.
